This week we bought our flight tickets for our trip during July to Australia. We're really looking forward to our first visit to work with our self direct Australia colleagues. It's an exciting time for us all.

I will be travelling with my colleague at self direct in the UK Sarah Wood. Sarah is self direct's Family Carer Involvement Lead and has extensive experience of the changes taking place across the UK. She has personal experience of how liberating taking control of the support a family needs can be, both for the person needing support and the whole family, her son was one of the first people in York to get an Individual Budget. You can read Sarah's blogs on the self direct website for the UK to find out more about her personal experiences.

Later in July my colleague Keith Wyatt will be joining us. Keith has many years experience of working to make sure people who need support have a real voice and he has developed many innovative social enterprises in the UK.

We're looking forward to finding out how the whole agenda of choice and control is developing in Australia and to working with like-minded people and organisations in Australia to discover new ways to take this forward.
